How to Detect and Solve Web Server Downtime and Website Backups for Non-Techies

how to detect server downtimeWebsites Crash All the Time. But What Will It Cost You if Your Business Website Crashes? Will You Even Know Your Website is Down?

Websites are essential to many businesses and if they crash the business can be in serious trouble. Sales, recruitment, enquiries and ultimately profits are at risk.

But how do you know if your website has crashed. The first you know could be when online orders dry up. It’s not possible to manually visit your site every hours to check it is still working.

And what can be done to ensure your site doesn’t go down or, if it does, it is up and running again in seconds?

I’ve seen these problems, first hand, when my clients have experienced them. £multi-million businesses brought to their knees when a website server crashes.  £tens of thousands revenue being lost every day.

In some cases this has happened on Friday afternoon and no has noticed until Monday morning when they find an empty order in tray. It’s a devastating feeling in the pit of your stomach when you see this.

But it can be avoided in most cases. (more…)

The Science of Ignorance: Agnotology

The Science of Not Knowing, Ignorance or Not Knowing is Common… But Shouldn't Be

"I didn't know" is a poor excuse, but we are all guilty of it to a greater or lesser extent. Technically Agnotology is the culturally induced lack of knowledge or about doubt. It was coined in 1995 and is often the result of digging deeper, learning more but ending up more confused the more you read. It can also result from reading too much Fake News!

Agnotology is not to be confused with Ainigmology which is about using information to confuse .. the tobacco companies have been accused of this in the past.

But I'm not concerned with either one of these. I'm more concerned about the number of us that don't bother to keep informed. I've heard " I didn't know" so many times.

People say things to me like, "I didn't know our advertising wasn't working", "I didn't know our website wasn't working", "I didn't know online sales had dropped".

There is no excuse for any of us not knowing the essentials of our own business.

Information is freely available on a screen to tell us if online sales have dropped or if our adverts aren't working. We only have to look! There are dozens of free marketing tools available that will keep us informed.

Transcription Service by the Hour

TrintNeed to transcribe a video, audio or dictation?

There are various transcription services available in every country and even more overseas. Some charge per minute of audio or video and some by the hour.

Trint charges by the hour and has three usage levels and, as I write this, a free 30-minute trial.

Probably worth testing if you need transcription work undertaken.

How to Get 5 Star Ratings in Google Search Results

Five Stars Results on Google SearchGetting Five Star Ratings on Google

Getting great ratings on Google is something that sounds like a good thing. In theory if you are found on Google search, and have a good rating next to your name, it should give you an advantage over the other results on the page .. especially if you are the only one with a star rating.

And if, due to this, you get more clicks then naturally you are advantaged and are likely to get moved further up the results page.

This is likely to happen not only on Google search pages but also on Google maps and perhaps on YouTube!

So I’m trying an experiment. My colleague Ian Brodie has perfected a method for getting more 5* ratings and for getting these displayed in Google searches. I’m now trying to replicate his methodology. If it works I’l reveal the secret of not only getting great ratings on Google, but also how to display them on the search results pages (SERPS).

Give Stefan Drew a Great Google ReviewBut first I need a few more ratings. If you’ve found value in any of my posts over the years please give me a rating by clicking this review tag and rating me now.  Within a few seconds of clicking the link you should see a review box and a blue Write a Review button

Once I’ve collated the results I’ll write a post explaining how to achieve ratings results. It’ll be posted on this website.

OK, So I now have some results .. .. I’ve posted them on my education site and you can read them here at How to Get Five Star Ratings in Google Search Results.

But as an Executive Summary here’s how its done ….

How to Get Star Ratings in Google Search Results

  1. Go To Google Maps and open an account (if you don’t already have one).
  2. Encourage your customers to give you some good ratings … this was easier than I expected.
  3. Insert schema code in your website footer. This is simpler than it sounds and tells Google that your site and ratings are related.
  4. Let Google work it’s magic. After 4-6 days you should see the results in Google’s SERPS (Search Engines Results Pages).
