Are Teens Deserting Facebook?
July 6, 2012
Where have all the teens gone?
According to researcher ComScore, Facebook, which claims over 900 million members, had c158 million unique visitors to its site in April. this is up just 5% from a year ago. That compares with year-over-year growth rates of 89% in April 2010. Phew, is this going backwards?
The problem seems to be that kids are deserting Facebook as the older generation take over. the "cool factor" is being lost and kids are looking elsewhere. Places free from their parents.
Facebook has tried to retain an edge. As mobile usage rises they've brought out apps. They recognise that teens surf the Internet and chat and Facebook is trying to be part of this mobile culture. they've brought out two mobile apps such, Facebook Messenger and Facebook Pictures, which could appeal to teens.
But is it too little, too late?
Facebook are also testing ways to allow under 13s, who are currently prohibited from Facbook, to participate with parental supervision.
Interestingly as Facebook appears to be losing teens LinkedIn is seeing an upsurge in graduates and those about to leave school. They grow up so quick these days!
